Origins of Yiddish in the French and German Alsace

5-14 June 2020

Hit the road on this tour of Strasbourg, FREIBURG, Heidelberg, SPEYER, WORMS, MAINZ and Frankfurt

Venture from Strasbourg in northeastern France all the way to Frankfurt in central Germany to get a taste of Jewish life in the Alsace region. On the 10-day trip we'll be visiting the former centres of Ashkenazi Jewish life to see synagogues, museums, memorials and historic architecture. Itinerary

Day 1: Friday 5 June

Arrive in Strasbourg and head to Colmar to visit museums and sites of interest, including the Bartholdi Museum, which is located in the former home of artist Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi (renowned for sculpting the Statue of Liberty). From there we’ll head to Dambach la ville for some kosher wine tasting before driving back to Strasbourg for a walking tour through the Jewish areas, including Contades Park and Rue des Juifs. We'll then attend Kabbalat Shabbat before a kosher dinner at Le King.

Day 2: Saturday 6 June

Optional morning synagogue service or free time, then a look round Synagogue de la Paix and the Oeuvre Notre-Dame Museum, which houses Jewish tombstones that date back to the 12th century. Kosher dinner will be at La Fabrique à Miam.

Day 3: Sunday 7 June

Day trip to the Alsatian Villages of Hagenau, Pfaffenhoffen, Ettendorf and Bouxwiller. Amongst the attractions visited will be the Judeo-Alsatian Museum, Museum of History, the oldest synagogue in Alsace and a Jewish museum with a mikvah. We’ll end the day with a kosher dinner at a local restaurant.

Day 4: Monday 8 June

Explore Freiburg including its synagogue before departing for Heidelberg where we’ll have a guided tour of the synagogue before checking into our hotel where we’ll have dinner.

Day 5: Tuesday 9 June

We’ll leave Heidelberg and head to Speyer, where we'll tour the Jewish courtyard and medieval mikvah of Museum SchPIRA. We’ll then take boat trip from Speyer to Worms to discover how the Jews of the city lived a century ago. We’ll then check in to our hotel in Worms here dinner will be provided.

Day 6: Wednesday 10 June

We’ll start the day with a tour of Jewish Worms, including the Rashi House museum, synagogue, mikvah and Jewish cemetery. In the afternoon we’ll travel to Mainz taking in Klara Street, Feidbergschule, Landesmuseum and have some leisure time. We’ll check in to our hotel in Mainz and have dinner at a local restaurant.

Day 7: Thursday 11 June

We’ll continue our tour of Mainz, taking in the new synagogue, down-town area and Gutenberg Musuem. In the afternoon we’ll head to Frankfurt for a walking tour of the city, including St Paul’s church and Borne Place.

Day 8: Friday 12 June

We’ll continue our exploration of Frankfurt, taking in the Jewish Museum, Wollheim Holocaust Memorial, Grünerburgpark, Paul Arnsberg Memorial Stele and more. Later we’ll embark on a boat tour, followed by evening Shabbat services and dinner at the hotel.

Day 9: Saturday 13 June

Optional morning synagogue service or free time, then a kosher Shabbat meal, afternoon walking tour and kosher farewell dinner at Sohar’s restaurant.

Day 10: Sunday 14 June

Departure transfer to Frankfurt airport.


Cost

The cost of this trip, excluding the flight, is £2,195-£2,495 per person (depending on numbers) sharing a double or twin room. The single supplement is £595. This cost* includes all accommodation, all tours and transfers, professional English-speaking guides, entrance fees to attractions, plus half-board meals (food will be kosher when available or vegetarian with permissible fish options).

The cost does not include: Flights to Strasbourg and from Frankfurt, visa, insurance, meals not mentioned in full itinerary, drinks at meals, personal expenses and gratuities (suggested €9/d).
