Fortnight in Argentina

Marvel at the vast beauty of this South American region

Set foot on the vibrant streets of Buenos Aires, before we embark on a Jewish history tour of Argentina. Visit the area downtown where the city was born, head to Mendoza, a city at the base of the Andes Mountains, and visit Iguazú National Park, a huge rainforest that spans the border between Argentina and Brazil. We will also visit Uruguay's capital Montevideo to explore the Jewish community in the beachside suburb of Carrasco. Itinerary

Day 1: Wednesday 4 November

Arrive at Buenos Aires Ezeiza Airport. Tour the northern part of the city, including the beautiful barrios (districts) of Retiro and Recoleta. In the former, visit Plaza San Martín park and find out how England contributed to the growth of Buenos Aires in the late 19th- and early 20th-centuries. In Recoleta explore the Parisian-style mansions that make Buenos Aires the “the Paris of South America” and Recoleta Cemetery, where you'll find the Evita's mausoleum.

Day 2: Thursday 5 November

Tour downtown Buenos Aires, visiting Plaza de Mayo, the colonial Cabildo building, the Holocaust memorial monument inside Metropolitan Cathedral, Casa Rosada and Teatro Colón opera house. Also explore the traditional neighbourhoods of San Telmo and La Boca, plus the revamped waterside district Puerto Madero. In the evening enjoy an Argentinian dinner and tango performance.

Day 3: Friday 6 November

In the Jewish neighbourhood Once we'll visit Asociación Mutual Israelita Argentina, a Jewish community centre founded in 1894, and Paso Street Synagogue, where we'll learn about the immigration of Ashkenazi Jews to Argentina. Lunch will be at a kosher parrilla (grill). Then explore Palermo, followed by Belgrano, where we'll see Seminario Rabínico Latinoamericano academic centre and Comunidad Bet-El synagogue. Dinner available at the hotel or a kosher meal after Kabbalat Shabbat service.

Day 4: Saturday 7 November

A day of free time to relax at the hotel or enjoy the city. Breakfast, lunch and dinner at the hotel are included.

Days 5/6: Sunday 8 – Monday 9 November

Morning ferry to Montevideo, Uruguay. After lunch at the hotel we'll head out to discover Jewish life in the capital. See Ciudad Vieja (Old City), where Jewish immigrants first settled at the end of the 19th century, Golda Meir Square and a Holocaust memorial inspired by the Wailing Wall. Plus, visit historic sites such as Constitution Square, where we'll browse a flea market, the colonial Palacio Municipal (City Hall), and Palacio Taranco. We'll also pass through Pocitos to get a glimpse of present-day Jewish life in Uruguay. Monday lunch will be at the port restaurant before we board the ferry back to Buenos Aires.

Day 7: Tuesday 10 November

Morning domestic flight to Mendoza, at the base of the Andes Mountains. Hotel check-in, then tour the Foundation Area Museum, General San Martín Park and Cerro La Gloria (The Hill of Glory), where there's a monument to the Andes Army. Lunch will be at Clos de Chacras and dinner at the hotel.

Day 8: Wednesday 11 November

Day trip to Lujan de Cuyo, a city home to leafy trees and extensive vineyards. We'll walk the wine trail, tour wineries and vineyards, and learn how to taste wine. While there we'll enjoy a gourmet kosher lunch and wine pairing. Dinner will be back at the hotel.

Day 9: Thursday 12 November

Journey into the Andean range of the Cordillera mountains, through the main settlements built on Route 7. Once we reach Horcones we'll make a 1.5-hour trek to Quebrada del Durazno (Peach Gorge). During the trip you will see the South Wall of Aconcagua, the highest mountain in the Western Hemisphere, diverse flora and fauna, Horcones River and Aconcagua Park. Lunch will be in Uspallata village and dinner at the hotel.

Day 10: Friday 13 November

Visit Uco Valley in western Argentina. Walk the wine trail, tour wineries and vineyards, and learn how to taste wine. While there we'll enjoy a gourmet kosher lunch and wine pairing. Dinner will be back at the hotel and Kabbalat Shabbat service at Mendoza's Israeli Society of Beneficence.

Day 11: Saturday 14 November

Another day of free time. Breakfast, lunch and dinner at the hotel are included.

Day 12: Sunday 15 November

Domestic flight to Puerto Iguazú. Once there you'll have time to relax at the hotel and explore its jungle surrounds.

Day 13: Monday 16 November

Visit Iguazú National Park and see the impressive Iguazú Falls, which consists of approximately 257 individual falls and was awarded the New7Wonders of Nature title in 2007. We'll also ride the Ecological Jungle Train.

Day 14: Tuesday 17 November

We'll be crossing the Brazilian border in Iguazú National Park, so make sure you've already pre-arranged the appropriate visa prior to the trip. Take this opportunity to snap some incredible panoramas of Iguazú Falls from Brazil. After a packed lunch (included), we'll drive to Puerto Iguazú airport and fly back to Buenos Aires. Dinner will be at the hotel.

Day 15: Wednesday 18 November

Departure transfer to Buenos Aires Ezeiza Airport.


Cost

The cost of this trip, excluding the flight, is estimated* at £4,595 per person (depending on numbers) sharing a double or twin room. The single supplement is £1,995. This cost includes all accommodation, all tours and transfers, professional bilingual (English and Spanish) guides, entrance fees to attractions, plus half-board meals (food will be kosher when available or vegetarian with permissible fish options). 

The cost does not include: Flights to and from Argentina, domestic flights and buses, visa, insurance, meals not mentioned in full itinerary, drinks at meals, personal expenses and gratuities.
