Development Director

Would you like a key role in opening a new chapter in the life of a vibrant and successful magazine? Renaissance Publishing is now seeking a Development Director.

It is 18 years since a group of individuals identified a need for a new window on Jewish culture and Jewish Renaissance magazine was born. Since then JR’s pages have been offering well researched in-depth writing that is lively and entertaining; that connects its readers with diaspora communities worldwide and alerts them to unmissable events in their area. JR is now the most widely read Jewish cultural magazine in the UK and is lauded throughout the world for its fresh and innovative approach.

JR has been changing with the times. Four years ago we recruited an exceptionally talented creative team, led by editor Rebecca Taylor, which brought both content and presentation to new standards of excellence. Our Sephardi section, launched two years ago, has enlarged the scope of the magazine and has been widely welcomed throughout the community.

In the last few months we have launched the JR app and a new website. These offer opportunities to enlarge our readership internationally and among younger generations.

To fully realise the potential of these advances we are for the first time recruiting a Development Director. The successful candidate will be responsible for outreach: building relationships with current and new readers, partners and donors, with those who know the magazine but need an added push to act, and with those who would enjoy its content but don’t yet know of its existence.

You will be able to work from home most of the time, visiting our office, based at JW3, once or twice a week. Your hours will be flexible and will occasionally involve attending events on Sundays or weekday evenings. Your salary will be competitive, reflecting the skills and experience you bring to the role.

You will report to the CEO and to the Board of Trustees.

The personal qualities you will need

You will have cultural interests and be enthusiastic about the mission of Jewish Renaissance magazine, and enjoy reading the articles it contains.

You will have a knowledge of Judaism and Jewish sensibilities.

You will bring with you several years’ experience in a marketing, fundraising or change management role. You will be keen to learn the special characteristics of our niche market, bringing your knowledge, research skills and creativity to suggest new approaches.

You will be outgoing and highly articulate, orally and in writing, confident, but also having sensitivity to the needs and feelings of those you are seeking to influence.

You will have great curiosity and you will love research.

You will get things done speedily and efficiently, and be well organised in managing your time and in your record-keeping. You will realise the importance of paying attention to detail, but you will see the wider picture too and be able to think ‘outside the box’.

You will have strong computer skills and be a quick learner of new applications, preferably with experience of customer relationship management systems.

You will be happy working in a team, sharing your ideas and plans and taking the lead where appropriate, but you will also be a self-starter and equally productive when working on your own.
