Suzanne Perlman 1923-2020

The Dutch-Hungarian visual artist has died aged 96

Jewish artist Suzanne Perlman passed away, aged 96, on the morning of Sunday 2 August. Talented, passionate and extremely hard-working, Perlman was active right up until her death: appearing in conversatoin with her grandson Matthew for Insiders/Outsiders festival just a few days before.

Born in Budapest in 1923, Perlman moved to Holland in 1939 after she married, but was forced to flee just a year later to escape Nazi persecution. She and her husband Henri lived for three decades in Curaçao, a place that inspired much of Perlman’s artistic work. After the passing of her husband in 1982, Perlman moved to London in 1990, where she continued to create.

Over the years, she has had many exhibitions, in Curaçao, Holland, New York and London. JR featured these over the years and we’ve included a couple of articles below (click to read) in tribute to the remarkable artist. Read an interview with her from 2014 and a review of her book Motifs of Curaçao from 2007.
