Canvey: The Promised Island

The seafront town has seen a surge in Jews taking residence over the years and this film explores the challenges of integration faced by both the newcomers and existing non-Jewish islanders. Hester Street
Jewish filmmaker Joan Micklin Silver made her big-screen debut with Hester Street. This restored 4K version of the film focuses on Gitl, a young Orthodox Jewish woman who travels to America to reunite with her husband. Shortly after her arrival, she discovers that he has adopted a new identity, one that clashes with their original culture and traditions. Shown as part of Jewish Culture Month.

Azara x Limmud Summer Beit Midrash
In the inaugural workshop hosted by Jewish educational organisations Azara and Limmud, participants from all backgrounds are invited to develop a stronger relationship with the joyful texts of Judaism. This year’s theme is ‘The Possibility of Change’, in both a personal and collective sense, focusing specifically on teshuvah (repentance) and tikun (repair). Sessions include beginner and intensive Talmud studies, training on how to teach texts with the Pardes Institute of Jewish Studies, and community meals.
