Modern Art in the Midlands: Jewish Connections in Unexpected Places

  • Jewish Renaissance, The Jewish Life Centre 12E Keystone Passage, Shenley Road Borehamwood, WD6 1AE UK (map)

Neither Walsall nor Leicester are obvious destinations for an art tour, let alone one focused on issues of Jewish experience and identity. Yet the New Art Gallery Walsall is home to a rich collection centred around the work of Jewish sculptor Jacob Epstein, while the Leicester Museum and Art Gallery houses a world class collection of German expressionist art based on pieces saved by the German Jewish Hess family, who found refuge in the UK.

Join us for this two-day trip to the Midlands led by art historian Monica Bohm-Duchen, which includes:

  • Exclusive guided tours of the New Art Gallery Walsall and Leicester Museum and Art Gallery;

  • Privileged access to the archive in Walsall;

  • A visit to St Matthew’s Church in Northampton, home to Henry Moore’s Mother & Child and Graham Sutherland’s Crucifixion, which took inspiration from the Holocaust;

  • An overnight stay at the four-star, Grade II-listed Georgian Ansty Hall in Coventry, with breakfast included and stunning views of the Warwickshire countryside.

Meeting point: Golders Green Station, 9.45am, Tuesday 9 July

Learn more about Jacob Epstein in our free virtual talk on Monday 8 July (1pm) with Monica Bohm-Duchen. Both events are run in partnership with the Lyons Learning Project.

Places are extremely limited, so book now to avoid disappointment.

from £340.00

Prices include all coach transport, entry and tours of the museums, four-star accommodation and dinner (9 July only; lunches not included).
