The Walk with Amal

Don't miss your chance to walk with Amal, the giant refugee girl puppet making her way across the UK this month

Little Amal, the giant puppet of a nine-year-old refugee girl, has almost completed her epic journey across Europe to highlight the plight of refugees. She started out in Turkey in July and, after an eventful walk across mainland Europe, has now crossed the Channel and reached UK shores. She'll now cross the country en route to her final destination in Manchester, where she's due to arrive on Wednesday 3 November. There will be events at every place she visits on the way, many of them free, where members of the public are invited to join her.

Her London stops (22-24 Oct) include a party for Amal's 10th birthday at at the V&A Museum, with a cake made by Ottolenghi, plus more in Deptford, St Paul’s Cathedral, Shakespeare’s Globe, the Southbank, Somerset House and Trafalgar Square. After that she makes her way to Manchester via Oxford (26 Oct), where she meets Lewis Carroll’s Alice; Coventry (27 Oct), where she'll discover the city's refugee history; Barnsley (30 Oct), where Syrian-Palestinian artist Maryam Samaan has used materials from Amal's voyage to create an installation, The Rope of Hope; and many more.
