When Yiddish-speaking immigrants came to England from Eastern Europe, they embraced their new British identities and debunked any rumours that they may be naive and old fashioned. Discover the art, poetry, pop songs and sketches from the popular Yiddish press in this online discussion led by historian and performer Dr Vivi Lachs alongside JR’s executive director Dr Aviva Dautch.
Dr Vivi Lachs is a historian of the Jewish East End, research fellow at Queen Mary, University of London, and a performer of Yiddish poetry and song. She is the author of a number of books, including East End Jews: Sketches from the London Yiddish Press and Whitechapel Noise: Jewish Immigrant Life in Yiddish Song and Verse, London 1884-1914. She co-hosts The Cockney Yiddish Podcast, is vice-chair of the Yiddish Cafe Trust and regularly leads walking tours of Jewish London.
