This year sees the publication of a new illuminated Haggadah – the first to be published in the UK in decades. Created over seven years by Leon Fenster – the artist behind JW3’s nine-storey London Jewish Mural – it brings the stories of Seder to life in kaleidoscopic paintings of cities and historical events, whilst referencing key artists in history, from Brueghel to Van Gogh. The illustrations reimagine Jewish communities and texts from Barcelona to Venice to Shanghai, from the 14th-century Catalan Golden Haggadah to the oldest surviving illuminated Ashkenazi Birds’ Head Haggadah, and even Rony Oren’s 1985 claymation film, The Animated Haggadah. It is a visual and cultural feast. Join Fenster in this online event to explore the history of illuminated Jewish manuscripts and discuss his new creation.
All those who register will receive a discount code for Fenster’s Haggadah: A Living Tapestry.
