The most famous pop group in the world was managed by a Liverpudlian Jew, Brian Epstein. Now, a new play at London’s Kiln Theatre tells his story in Please Please Me. We’ll be (virtually) visiting the Fab Four’s old stomping grounds, like The Cavern Club, and celebrating all things Beatles with novelist Linda Grant, who grew up in Liverpool’s Jewish community in the 1960s (and once shared a cuppa with Paul McCartney’s dad). Plus, we hear from the playwright, Tom Wright about how Epstein’s gay and Jewish identity influenced his work and relationship with the band (read about it in the Winter 2026 issue of JR), and Les Lancaster, who is emeritus professor at Liverpool John Moores University and a member of the city’s Princes Road Synagogue, about the city’s present-day community.
