From the 1880s to the 1950s, Yiddish immigrants in London’s East End argued over matters personal, professional and political. Historian and performer Dr Vivi Lachs traces the steps of many of these former residents to reveal how their opinions and, therefore, actions helped make the capital the vibrant and diverse city it is today.
The tour will last approximately 1.5 hours; comfortable walking shoes recommended.
Dr Vivi Lachs is a historian of the Jewish East End, research fellow at Queen Mary, University of London, and a performer of Yiddish poetry and song. She is the author of a number of books, including East End Jews: Sketches from the London Yiddish Press and Whitechapel Noise: Jewish Immigrant Life in Yiddish Song and Verse, London 1884-1914. She co-hosts The Cockney Yiddish Podcast, is vice-chair of the Yiddish Cafe Trust and regularly leads walking tours of Jewish London.
