Vanished Streets: Unseen Photographs of Jewish London

Hosted in association with the Yiddish Book Centre, we’ll explore the history of Jewish East London’s vanished streets. Social historian, writer and artist Rachel Lichtenstein takes us on a virtual journey through Spitalfields via the astonishing archive of photographs by Shloimy Alman. Dr Aviva Dautch, JR’s executive director, will discuss the creativity of the Whitechapel Boys (and girl), Jewish artists, and poets who studied alongside the Bloomsbury Group in the early 20th century. Plus, Dr Vivi Lachs, author of Whitechapel Noise, unpacks the area’s Yiddish music hall culture, and Lisa Newman, publisher of White Goat Press at the Yiddish Book Centre, chairs the event. Read more about the Yiddish Book Centre’s exhibition of Shloimy Alman’s photographs in the Summer 2026 issue of JR.
